Yes Dick!  I've noticed this problem many times, and it has NOTHING 
to do with British/American terms. It seems that every once in a 
while the writer just arbitrarily uses another word. There is a lot 
of this in carburettor tuning-repair, and, when learning as a 
beginner, it created many confusing moments for me.
