Since the group that owned WIX was purchased by Mann Hummel, it seems that
many of the previously USA made filter part numbers have been offshored.
The most common filters I was using on Triumphs were the 51348 and the
51516, both are no longer made in the USA. I can't say that the Mexico or
China sourced filters are causing engine failures, but it made me feel good
to be using a quality, American made filter.
For the 51348 and 51516 sizes, I've found that the Champ brand PH2835 and
PH400 work just fine, and are made domestically.
I don't feel that our typical Triumph engines need the extra flow
capability of the "R" filters, I suspect that is more of a concern for
large V8 engines with big bearing clearances.
The spin-on adapter that we have developed for the 6 cylinder engines
(places the filter in the same location as the original filter housing)
allows for a larger diameter filter to be used. I've found the WIX 51311
is a good one, and it's still made in North Carolina. This is a 3/4-16"
thread filter, a little shorter than the 51515. The 51311 will also fit
many of the remote mounts, and as it's used on Volvo Trucks and buses, I
have no doubt it is of sufficient size for a Triumph engine.
