For a poor man=E2=80=99s data acquisition system, we are using the Track Ad=
dict app, available with any smartphone. =C2=A0I have mine rigged up on a K=
indle tablet of all things, and am using a 10hz external GPS receiver. =C2=
=A0(Phones usually have 1 hz which works, but not ideal.). =C2=A0I find thi=
s gives great information for short money, and the bonus is that if you hav=
e a chance to glance down, it gives you split times and green/red if you ar=
e faster or slower that split. =C2=A0Not to worry; I am not reading =E2=80=
=9CThe Last Open Road=E2=80=9D down the straights; although might give me s=
omething to do at RA. =C2=A0
=C2=A0Comparing data afterwards helps us greatly. =C2=A0(I have my Kindle m=
ounted in the Speedometer position). =C2=A0 You can also set the app to tur=
n on/off your GoPro, and it will sync up data to the video if you later com=
bine with Race Render on a PC/Mac.
Fast forward to stuff from the autocross world, there is an app called Solo=
storm which downloads video and overlays the data gathered real time, compa=
ring drivers on the spot, between runs even. =C2=A0 Awesome. =C2=A0They jus=
t released a track version; check out Petral Data systems. =C2=A0Haven=E2=
=80=99t tried the track version yet, but after years of not spending the mo=
ney on the software, I=E2=80=99m now kicking myself for not getting it soon=
er, with its instant feedback. =C2=A0TrackAddict can do almost the same, bu=
t requires more fiddling=E2=80=A6. And can compare afterwards to see what w=
as happening when, g force, top speeds, segment times, braking points and s=
trengths, etc. =C2=A0
It was super interesting to see the data comparison between the #80 and 114=
TR4=E2=80=99s with the same driver; one had an 11 mph advantage at exit of=
the last turn at Thompson, but gave up in gearing later on, and also in sp=
eed around the hairpin. =C2=A0(Quaife vs welded diff). =C2=A0Super interest=
ing!
Having the split times displayed real time with TrackAddict=C2=A0helped me =
at the Glen realize I could hold turn 1 in 4th gear, and only lose a tenth =
or two; also helped not having a shift later; top speed was the same into t=
he bus stop and at the top of the esses. =C2=A0=C2=A0 =C2=A0I was likely ov=
erslowing=C2=A0downshifting to third, but since I couldn=E2=80=99t shift, =
=C2=A0I found out how to carry speed to hold 4th=E2=80=A6. LOL. =C2=A0 (Was=
the nascar configuration). =C2=A0I used to shun data, as =E2=80=9Ctoo much=
info=E2=80=9D but now I see the wisdom, and it helped me real time with th=
e proper tools.
Hope that helps!Dave Gott

Last year at the Jefferson 500 I had three great sessions with a guy runnin=

a lot of the things they covered in the Hagerty article. It looked extremel=
y helpful, but the one thing I don't remember him mentioning was the live c=
oaching feature. I can only wonder why...=C2=A0

I really liked what I saw, but the research revealed two showstoppers, the =
unit can not get wet and the camera has a very specific spot it needs to be=
mounted. Naturally, that spot is where the rear view mirror on the windscr=

So my data acquisition program remains a knock-off Go-Pro camera that I neg=
