The latest composite gaskets from Payden have the eyebrow removed
from the gasket. The holes are not round, they have the "eyebrows"
removed from both sides (in case you do this for the exhaust
too). In an 87 mm motor, with eyebrows in the bores as you describe,
I have zero protrusion into the combustion chamber. I believe that
the bores in the gasket are 88 mm, with the eyebrows. For an 89 mm
motor they would be a problem.
I was pleasantly surprised by this engineering change in my last
rebuild. I have o-rings in the top of my liners to help seal the
combustion chamber as well. I can go a full season on a composite
gasket with that setup.
