I think we need to develop an appreciation of motorsports at an early
age maybe a scolastic carting
program could be the answer. Over the past month Dave Despain on Speed
Channel has been talking
up a "Little League"-like carting program.
I only hope something like this can catch on. John Surtees and Brian
Redman alluded to a similar thing
in the press conferences at the BRIC last month. Only instead of a
little league like program they
suggested a scholastic program that would get kids involved in mechanics
and driving earlier. Their
contention was that even if the kids didn't "become drivers" they may
become enthused about
engineering or design. If nothing else the practical experience of
racing carts would make better
drivers by allowing children to make bonehead mistakes in carts without
deadly results that happen
when they start to drive cars on the streets.
Surtees and Redman recommended that to make this program even more of a
success there should
be some way to keep the parents' egos out of the picture.
