Quick check: sniff for hydrocarbons from the radiator.

Ask the local smog check place to use their exhaust gas
analyzer to sniff over the open radiator cap (the service shop
that started this thread probably has one).

Or you can buy chemical test kits that you suck air thru a
vial of chemicals and see if it changes color.
