Here is an example of a tire that came
on my roadster when I purchased it last
year. I pulled the car 1,000 miles with
a tow dolly and the front wheels on the
ground. This was one of the tires. It
had been sitting for about 15 years
before I got the car, and it was fairly
well worn out. The damage you see in
the picture happened just sitting beside
my garage in the afternoon sun, exactly
as you see in the picture. Keeping the
tires at least a little fresh seems like
a good idea.

Spotted a news segment about a fellow
who was driving a old Sunbeam
(Tiger?) when the tire blew out. I
suspect it involves a law suit
as the friend with him during the roll
over was left with massive
brain damage. :(
Still... with our roadsters, how many of
us change out old
tires and pitching them. I've had a
couple of old Michelins that
looked fine blow out of my due to age.
Thankfully no problem other
than time taken to put on the spare
tire. I've learned not to trust
10 year old tires, but in many cases
only clue to the age of the
tires was that the car had been sitting
for xx years...
Still... anyone driving on 10 year old
tires? Usually there is
a "THREE DIGIT" date code... 414 would
be 41st week of 1994.
