Joe,
    I believe the 4 wires coming out are

        1.  Water temp sending unit.
        2.    To resistor block
        3.    Bypass resistor block on start.
        4.    Coil to distributor.

    If you have power to the ignition switch then you should be able to test
as follows.

    One wire should be hot anytime the ignition is on.  This should be the
one to the resistor block.
    One should be hot only when the ignition switch is moved to start.  This
should be the resistor bypass straight to the coil.
    If neither of these wires is connected to the resistor or coil then you
should be able to test for the water temp wire by grounding the other two
one at a time.  If your temp gauge is working, when you ground its wire the
gauge should move.
    By elimination the last one should go to the distributor.
