Fred,

You are correct and that is exactly what I have done to all three of my 
roadsters. Works slick and make changing a starter a 15 mintue job instead of a 
real PIA.
Drill out the spot welds holding it in place and you can reuse the piece you 
removed, fabricate a new one or simply leave it out,
