Starter motor

In posting a note to Mark Clary regarding his starter motor, something came
to mind.  I seem to recall a tech note from Nissan that recommended removing
the  gusset that is located just in front of the firewall.  Nissan said that
it served only as a splash guard and could be removed for starter access.
Is this correct or am I thinking of something else?
