It's the rocker shaft fixing screw. the same used on my truck. It screws
into one of the towers and into the shaft, fixing it into place.

Subject: Question re Burg/Mystery Part?

When I took the valve cover off my 1966 1600 I found a loose headless bolt
(with a screw slot in one end) among the rockers and springs. It is about
3/8 inch in diameter. It appears to fit in one of the rocker arm supports,
or in one of two holes in the top of the head, but I can't find anything
about it in the service manual or parts book. My son said the part is
called
a burg in bicycle land (usually seen in much smaller sizes holding knobs on
shafts). It may be part number 55, 56 on Gordon's
http://www.gordon-glasgow.org/Images/4.gif

Does anyone know what it is for, which of the three holes it goes into, how
far in it should be screwed, and whether there are any other parts there
that
work with it.

Thanks.
