My thermostat housing came off without any problem at all. I was all pumped
up for a fight, but after I got the bolts undone it just lifted right off.
BTW, is there any negative effects of using stainless steel hardware in
aluminum?

I use stainless bolts rather than studs and it works fine. Just remember to
put teflon tape on the threads and some Form-a-Gasket or even a dab of
silicone to make sure it doesn't leak through the threads. I also smear
antiseize on the length of the bolts.
