This is a list of the auto boxes that I am aware have been used behind
Rover V8's:

Borg Warner 35 - P5B, P6B

Borg Warner 65 - SD1

GM 180 (Trimatic) - SD1

Chrysler Torqueflite - Range Rover

Ford C4 - Range Rover

ZF 4HP22 - Range Rover

There is an number of adapter kits (including adaptor plate) for the GM
Turbo 700R (possibly also suit Turbo 350 & 400), which have been used in
both rear wheel and 4 wheel drive configurations.
The GM Turbo 700R and ZF 4HP22 are both 4-speed (overdrive top)
gearboxes, the rest are 3-speed.

The ZF 4HP22 as used in the Range Rover has an output shaft and rear
housing to suit mounting to a 4 wheel drive transfer case. We are
currently investigating using a Range Rover ZF 4HP22 bell-housing/torque
convertor/flexplate with a ZF 4HP22 gearbox from a Jaguar XJ40, in a
Rover P5B coupe. The Jaguar sourced box has a conventional rear wheel
drive output shaft and rear housing. The lock-up clutch is electronic and
can be wired to a cabin switch activation/ brake pedal deactivation
set-up. I'm told (but have yet to confirm) that the 1987-89 XJ40 boxes
were purely cable modulated, the later ones are a combination of Cable
and electronic modulation.
