Actually there are lots of 914s running around with Chevy V8s. The trick is
to offset the water pump and alternator off to the side. Lots of room without
any modification to the body.
The appeal of the late Rover engine is that with stock water pump and pulley
locations it is within a fraction of an inch of the Chevy with offset
components.
My old engineless 914 race car is sitting in the garage right next to a '96
Rover EFI engine which is destined for an MGGT. Not much choice but to try it
,is there?
