In my '68 MGB I've used the later year red rubber gasket instead of the cork
with no sealant and a small rubber gasket that looks like a 1/8" long piece
of hose under a dished steel washer (I think this is from the later year
Bs). With this combination I've had no leak and have been able to remove
the cover many times without having to replace the gasket and still no
leak.
