Before it was a number, it was the new four-lane road to San Jose from
Oakland. Somewhere in that time frame it was decided to give it a name,
thus it's named in honor of Admiral Chester Nimitz, a WWII hero who retired
to Berkeley, after leaving the U.S. Navy.
Then came numbers, like 17 or more recently 880 to grab some Federal money
to fix the thing.

To control speeders, the Oakland police acquired a Packard to chase them.
The penalty if caught going over the limit was an automatic 5 days in Santa
Rita.
Times have changed
