        FWIW, I completely assembled the front, THEN I used the spring
compressor to install the spring and the spring pan. It worked just
fine, and nothing has gone wrong since (screeeeeeech! CRASH!). Uhh, make
that nothing has gone wrong until recently. 
        (just kidding).

Now, my question is this.  Is there anything problematic with now
installing the spring by (1) inserting the spring in the upper tower and
on the spring pan, (2) using a spring compressor, draw up the spring pan
so it can be bolted to the lower wishbones, and (3) further draw this
assembly up to attach the vertical link to the ball joint assembly?  It
seems like it would be much easier to guide the vertical link onto the
ball joint spindle than to try to mess with the trunnion assembly.  But
then my brighter self was able to get my attention during a weak moment
and said, if it's so much easier to do it this way why doesn't the
documention suggest this?

I'm feeling particularly good today, so strong criticism, teasing and
general fun-making is very welcome.  Thanks for any help.
