thank you for all the answers - here's the continuation:
Yesterday I went to a garage (specialised in Volvos and Saabs - hence
Borg-Warner experienced), intention was topping up the ATF as this (low oil
level) was the initial thought in all your answers. And this garage was the
only one I found which had the right stuff (Type F/Ford spec M2C-33G - thank
you, Andy).
Unfortunately, the oil level is on maximum (prescribed circumstances, after
45min run, idle a few minutes, shifting through the gears). This and the
heavy 'thump' when engaging 'R' lead the mechanic to the conclusion, the box
is on its way out and I should save up for an exchange (or rebuild). He
advises against an oil change, the 'thin' new oil would make matters worse.
As if it wanted to prove his theory, on my way home the initial effect
(loosing friction in sharp bends) happend for the first time with a hot
motor/gearbox.
I phoned the previous owner today (a car mechanic, earning his money with
Mercs but has a soft spot for british cars, currently owns a Herald and a
1300GT) and he 'seems to remember' that he changed the ATF (probably Dexron
spec.) with which it ran the last approx. 18000 miles. He'd tip on a blocked
filter and suggests oil and filter change.
Who would subscribe the one or other theory?
