Hi All
I would usually have replied to this before now but have been off air so to
speak, a new motherboard and processor which suddenly made my modem stop
working, and the day I got a replacement modem both our telephone lines
failed following a down pour of rain (pit full of water?) and it took bt a
week to fix. So yes there are people out here but I hadn't been getting any
questions from the list.

To answer another question posted, I have a MKI 2000 with the flat top
block, I too had a head gasket go, probably the original, then the
replacement failed within a couple of months, (it did have a heavy trailer
with a Dolomite Sprint on it at the time, going up quite a steep hill).
The best advice I can give is to make sure the head is retorqued, run the
engine until it is hot then retorque the head, then again at 1000 miles,
possibly overkill but I do mine when the tappets need doing, about once a
year, the head gasket is still in place four years later, the car no longer
does the milage it used to as the milage is spread between three cars but it
generally does all the hard work like towing trailers and broken cars!
