For steel a good fine polish is Chromium Dioxide. It's green. In a pinch you can use green oil paint (make sure it has CrO2 in it...) - won't cut as fast as polish compound but will still make stuff

I would be very sure you use a good mask with CrO2. its a pretty toxic heavy metal oxide

True. If you use oil paint then it may tend to spatter. The polishing compound I use is just softer than a wax crayon, not powder form. -Malcolm
