I am not sure but, it sounds like the Ackerman kit did use some of the dirt/moisture type joints.. YES, a completely different easily obtainable newer rack would solve my 1976 reservations to the kit

Mine is now a "dull chrome" look too... BUT, I think it was originally a sort of dark brown. If you pull the lens off, look at the metal tabs where they are protected inside. NOT dull chrome look..
