Another wild guess, the high torque starter drew too much current which partially melted/screwed up the starter solenoid, reducing the voltage available to the ballast resistor and hence hurting high

the Theo is right, be careful blasting sheet metal. Lower pressure with high volume flow rate works best. Blasters do a fine job on non-sheet metal parts such as castings, et al. BTW, consider making
