When running without a thermostat, you should use a special blanking plate in its place. This will force coolant to the year of the cylinder head keeping the whole thing cool instaed of just #1 cylin

Eddie, Change the thermostat. (Even if it's new). Try this first, it may just solve your problem. Gates makes a very good thermostat, which you can get at your local NAPA. Kevin V.
