This bracket apparently supports a "tie-rod" to abate fore-and-aft movement of the power-unit and is only found on "some models," according to my older Haynes manual; at a quick look I didn't see it

I had a similar gasoline odor - turned out to be a slightly leaking fuel hose where it clamps to the fuel pipe behind the left rear wheel-well. Meanwhile, I'm following your gauge saga with interest
