- I'm thinking gear oil for starters. Clutch doesn't sound likely at the moment. Usually the wrong oil is too thick and its hard to shift when cold. But yours getting hard when hot is a little puzzling

- The clutch on my 76 1500 seems to grab quite a lot when its engaging. There seems to be little opportunity to slip/feather it. Not really a problem but it sure makes it tough to climb service ramps.
