I would rule out smart as they knew it in 89 but probably was not cost effective to change the production stamping till the model redesign. I don't think the Gen IIs had that problem. Ford got smarte

When factory and shops charge a system it is done by weight, what we usually buy is by volume (fluid oz for the oil). Then unless you flush the whole system there is oil left in the other components.
