I believe the timing cover can only be removed by taking off the oil pan to get at two bolts. These can be drilled out and the bearing cap can be tapped and then you can remove the timing cover with

Did the same thing with my truck when I was in college. Ended up using a coat hanger and going through the hole where the heater hoses go into the cab, made it a little easier and straighter pull on

Could the "water" be a by product of the combustion of the gas from the torch. I have one of those new high efficiency furnaces and just had it draining into a bucket they really put out the liquid.
