I think you are right on in your assessments. The bad shake sounds like its most likely a bad tire or a tire is out of balance. I have had this problem many times, particularly with Firestone tires (

As a "free" first step, you might try rotating your rear tires to the front. If that makes a difference, then wheel balance is your likely culprit. With wire wheels, I'd rotate one at a time to deter
