I took the 67B on a 300 mile, top-down cruise this week. It is still running
great and still has a small shimmy. It gets 28 MPH, is this about normal?
I had Les Schwab attempt to balance the wire wheels and tires on my trip back
from Seattle and they found that three wheels were too far out of round to
balance correctly. I found an old "bubble" wheel balancer (that you all
suggested to use) and rebalanced all the wire wheels myself to try to isolate
the small shimmy I've been having. I can't believe how many wheel weights were
on each wheel; enough to at least replumb part of Rome! I took them all off
and got all wheels balanced correctly and there is now very little shimmy. The
remainder must be in the rack/pinion, the worn bushings, and the steering
wheel.
I have the bushings and will probably find the time in the next month to
replace them, but I don't know what to do about the shimmy in the steering
wheel. Has anyone replaced the bushes and bearings in the steering wheel? When
I grab onto the inner column under the hood (just below the U-joint) and
wiggle it, it has some side to side play in it. The steering wheel rattles
when I hit bumps.
Oh Learned Ones, what suggestions do you have for me?
