Is it possible that your timing is 180 off? Have you checked that you are on the compression stroke of cyl.#1 when setting the timing? Backfiring sounds like 180 off to me... -Vince San Antonio

It sounds like the oil pressure relief valve is popping off at higher pressures (Higher RPM) and sticking open. Check for a tired (Non-Linear tension) relief spring or a burr in the valve assembly.
