Yes, i did make a mark on the distributor and the clamp, but not on the clamp and the block. I removed the clamp to clean the dirt and rust off without realizing the mounting holes were elongated, so

Couldn't you rig up some kind of variable resistor (pententimoeter/reostat) on the top of the piston to generate a voltage based on piston height? I seem to remember seeing a picture of some old wire
