My first thought is water vapor from combustion condensing in the cold exhaust pipe, and soot from the initial rich mixture before the choke's released. The water stops condensing after the ppe's war

Rick, Trevor, Dan, & Jerry, Many thanks for the suggestions. I think a sticking outlet valve on the fuel pump is the most likely source of the problem there, especially in view of its taking so long
