AFIK, they just put a pulley on your pump shaft and drive that with an electric motor, also AFIK they are only intended for part time (drag race) use, although given the reliability of electric motor

Al, the larger chunk is definately block material due to it's makup. It is oil stained on one side, and based on it's shape I would say it is part of the oil pan flange between two of the bolts. the
