Electrical problems like this present no great mystery, it's mostly a matter of methodically checking until the break is found. I assume you're measuring the 12.5 volts right at the battery. That is

And I checked the battery connections, but someting weird happened... I noticed the clock was running. Hit the horn and it beeped. Turned the key in the ignition and everything went dead again. Check

Scott - "All electrical passes through the ammeter" - all except for the starter voltage, which goes directly from the battery to the starter switch and then to the starter when the switch is pulled.

I think that our posts crossed on the way, but I will reiterate, your porblem is not the ammeter, the current for the starter does not go through the ammeter. You are having a problem with excessive

I agree with Blake....sounds like your battery has a shorted cell.......I recently went through this with my wife's car.....very weird and strange things were happening until we replace the battery..
