I have run at Bonneville both with and without an alternator. I'm assuming that you don't want to run the alternator for drag reasons. My experience is that on at least a V8 it doesen't hurt at all.

CV products makes a trick one wire setup complete with brackets and belts and pulleys. It mounts on the top right of the engine. Check'em out. Jim

You really need to run an alternator , nearly all ignitions thrive on 14volts, you would be shocked to see what a volt meter reads when just running a battery . Speedway sells a one wire alternator w
