- Could be the sheath in which the cable turns that is kinked/broken/frayed. Had that happen on my E-Type - the speedo bounced 20 mph all the time. Looked at the sheath and found it was coming apart. P

- Not sure I'd equate undercoating with a PO's desire to cover rust. May be the motivation, but maybe not. I fully coated mine with Schults material for several reasons--sound deadening and protection-
