I have welded (actually I filled the tooth gap with bronze) the spider gears for years with always the option of being able to return to an open axle by just replacing a couple of gears. IT'S EASY.

As I remember the BonAmi was in a can with lid drilled for shaking the stuff onto your stuff. It also came in a cake form. We used cake form for glass cleaning and scouring things but was too gritty
