I have welded up several diffs with no problem. I mig in a piece of quarter plate between the side gear . I have never preheated and had no problems . Just remember to allow clearance for the axles

How about TIG weld filling some of the spider gear teeth, preventing them rotating and effectively locking the unit. If needed, you can refit standard spider gears to return original function. Uses

There is an ARP that have splines that slightly to large. I turn them on a lathe to make the spline fit and then put a touch of weld on the back side as security. ____________________________________
