I wish I could include a sound file to this question, but what could produce a loud scraping noise in the engine? I removed the fan belt and the noise is still there. So that would remove the water

You were correct. Went out last night and checked the harmonic balancer. Currently there is a nice notch in the bottom of the timing mark. The aluminum timing chain cover is a fine sound box so the
