Does anyone know how to convert a TR7 tach to work with a v8? I have read several books on Z-car/V-8 conversions, which state that a simple resistor (of the proper size) is inserted into the wire dri

Sounds very unlikely. Fitting a resistor will merely reduce the voltage and/or current to the tacho. Some Smiths tachos use a current loop through an inductive pickup (e.g., like the one in my Hillm

Some time ago there was a similar question on the MGB V8 BBS. One fellow who put a Buick into a MGB came up with an electronic buffer to divide the V8 ignition coil pulses by two - "fooling" the Smit

Thanks for responding. I understand what you are saying. Is it that most "modern" tachometers use a different type of circuitry that measures the pulses from (or to) the ignition coil, and then conv

Many tachs can be switched to/from 4/6/8 by changing a resistor, but it's not usually in series with the connection to the coil. For analog tachs, there is a simple circuit inside that converts the

Randall, that is exactly what I believed to be true about how tachs actually convert the "signal"going to them into linear movement!! I believed that is was voltage, not "frequency" that actually dro

I found the following info. on the Listquest server from 1997: I have the schematic for the TR7/8 tachometer. I have used it to re-calibrate several TR7 tachs for TR8 use and to modify the tach for u
