Some time ago there was a similar question on the MGB V8 BBS. One fellow
who put a Buick into a MGB came up with an electronic buffer to divide the
V8 ignition coil pulses by two - "fooling" the Smiths tach into thinking it
was looking at a 4-cyl. This worked well.
Then someone posting on the subject stated that there is an
adjusting/calibrating resistor (pot) in the Smiths 4-cyl tach with enough
range to handle the V8 signals. Others apparently tried, and found out
that this worked, too.
I don't know, but am assuming that TR's would have used very similar Smiths
unit to MGB?

....don't know if non-MGB BBS "members" can get in.
