It could just be that the Bendix on the end of the starter is bad. I had a bad bendix on my Mini and it used to lock up randomly. I replaced the whole starter since it was old anyway and now save the

I think that is your problem right there. The starter gear is not extending fully. I had the same problem on my 1973 Yamaha motorcycle. That had a kick start, so I never fixed it. :-) Anyway, I would
