John--You should be able to get the engine to run decently with the equipment you have in place. The problem, unfortunately, means that it could be either electrical, or fuel related. While I suspect

Did you rebuild your carbs as part of the engine rebuild? If you did rebuild them and replace the needles and jets, how deep in the carb throat did you locate the jets? I had a similar problem cause
