John---You should be able to get the engine to run decently with the equipment
you have in place. The problem, unfortunately, means that it could be either
electrical, or fuel related. While I suspect that it's electrical, let's first
try some (easier) things that deal with the fuel:
First, run the needle height adjusting screws down to the bottom of their
travel. (Count the number of quarter turns, in case you want to return to the
start position). This will pull the needles up to their maximum richness. Do a
trial run.
If this doesn't improve things, then use a 20W-50 oil in the dashpots. Heavier
oil keeps the air valves from rising too quickly, which leans out the A/F mix.
You don't want leanness under acceleration. Make a trial run.
The above suggestions are easily reversed if they do no good. If they don't,
write back for some electrical ideas, as they could take up "too much space"
and not get sent to the list!
These are the kind of issues I like to tackle, in the comfort of my own garage.

Subject: [6pack] Missing under load
Tuning following my engine rebuild... When I put the pedal to the
floor in any gear, the engine misses badly, and smooths out when I
back off the throttle. This is especially true at 2000 rpms or less.
Once over 2500, it accelerates pretty well, still misses
occasionally.
I have 9.5:1 compression, Goodparts GP2 cam, smoothed ports. I am
running with stock ZS carbs.
I have checked timing, points, plugs multiple times. Have advanced
and retarded timing a few degrees. Replaced wires, rotor, dizzie cap
with known good ones. Changed carb needles for B1E. All these with
little effect. Dashpots have 5/20 oil in.
Vance called the GP2 a hairy cam, as I recall, and I am starting to
wonder whether that might be the issue. Maybe it needs to run over
2500 rpms...
Any other experiences out there or suggestions for where to go from here?
