Oh, one possible clue to this puzzle. As I mentioned the Lucas alternator would only drop to zero with the headlights on. We put a cheap circuit breaker, like from Advance Auto Parts, on the wire bet

The problem turned out to be that the negative wire from the battery to the body was missing. The system was getting some ground from the engine block wire, but not enough to power the headlights, t
