I just tried to cover this subject in a couple of paragraphs and gave up.
Trust me, this has been discussed to death on the Locost lists.

It's a problem of size, weight, and available gear ratios.  I'll vote for a
1600cc Xflow with a single rail 4 speed.  I used this combination in
the Westfield I built in 1986 and I was very happy with it.
