I've had many alternator failures over the years and have maybe realized
the actual problem just recently. The diodes and voltage regulator are
prone to die after prolonged and repeated heat soakings at elevated
temperatures. To prevent this the fan on most alternator applications
sucks air through the unit and exhausts it by the pulley so the heat
sensitive components mounted on the rear are cooled efficiently. That
air ideally should be at room temperature and not preheated by an
exhaust manifold for instance.
