In "Engineer to Win" Carroll Smith recommends The Metal Improvement Co. ( I
found their website thru Google),PeenRite and Abrasive Finishing Co. I have
had peening done on half-shafts and con rods at Polyrock Equipment Co. in
Chino,CA. They are not as expert as the above who process their parts to
aircraft standards, but they are much cheaper and so far, the results have
beeen good. Smith says that he thinks that all Hewland parts should be
peened, especially the input, output and final drive pinions. He's concerned
about fatigue, tho; he doesn't mention fretting in the gearbox. He says that
a special shot which is hardened to Rc 55 to 65 should be used.
I have never seen fretting in my LG500 Hewland and the dog ring problems
have not been fatigue, but rather rounding of the corners. I don't know
whether peening would help or not, but I'm sure that it wouldn't hurt. Here
again, I think that the hardened shot would be necessary because the dog
rings have a hard carburized case.
I have never had any gearbox parts peened; my experience with solving
fretting problems
is with theme park rides which generally get more exposure in a year than
most vehicles get in their entire useful life.
