RMVR has gone to a spec tire, the Dunlap FF tire, 9092 compound which is, I
believe also spec for Monoposto Register, SVRA, VARA, HSR, and SOVREN (with
apologies to those clubs if I've
misrepresented them.)
As to "big bucks," not sure what you mean. $550-$650 for a set that lasts
all season ain't too shabby.
RMVR has a "Legal & Proud" system of voluntary engine certification. You
can either have someone from the club inspect the engine or have your engine
builder certify it. Then you can run a "Legal & Proud" insignia on the car
and timing and scoring classifies you as FF(LP). We don't require it, but
if someone is running in front and "walking" the L&P guys, peer pressure
becomes a wonderful thing.
