I guess you didn't see Schuey last weekend at Suzuka. His qualifying was
a virtuoso performance.
If F1 skills required are low, how about CART? F1 retirees have
certainly done well in CART, haven't they? Not to well the other way,
however.
I remember a story about one of the F1 teams (Renault?) that gathered
journalists after the season and allowed those interested to drive their
cars from that season. Most didn't make it past the first turn. Ever
drive a car with about 1.5 lbs per HP?
F1 is all about technology. If you want to know about pneumatic valves,
look at the ads in Racecar Engineering and buy a few sets to test.
